Cooking and baking plastic-free may seem difficult and time consuming, but that is often because there aren't plastic free options to ingredients. In this recipe I will be helping you through each step and ingredient to make sure you can find adequate plastic free options. Luckily this recipe only calls for one ingredient that isn't normally plastic-free.

Cheese

Plastic-free cheeses are easier to find than you may think. Most grocery stores have a deli section where you can ask to have your cheese wrapped without plastic in deli paper. Or you can bring your own container and ask them to put the cheese in there, most places will say yes. Cheddar is one of the more difficult cheeses to find plastic-free because most places will precut and wrap the slices in plastic-wrap to save time. But you can ask for a freshly cut piece or whether you can leave a container there for when the next batch is cut.

Plastic-free Cheez-Its

Ingredients

Include everything your reader needs to make this recipe perfectly, with measurements, optional additions, or alternatives. For example:

  • 8 oz cheddar cheese (shredded)

  • 4 tbsp salted butter (room temperature)

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 1 cup flour

  • 2 tbsp water

Directions

Directions should always be short and to the point.

  1. In a food processor add the shredded cheese, butter, and garlic. Pulse until combined

  2. Add the flour in thirds pulsing after each addition. The mixture should look crumbly.

  3. Add in the water 1 tbsp at a time pulsing until it is doughy. Add another tbsp if the dough is looking too dry.

  4. Divide the dough in two and roll each piece into a log. Cover and leave in the fridge for 1-2 hours

  5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  6. Roll each of the logs until they are 1/8 inch in thickness. Then cut them into 1x1 inch squares. Poke a hole in each square and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  7. Bake for 15 minutes or til they are medium golden brown, flipping the pan in between.

  8. Remove the Cheez-Its from the baking sheet and place on drying racks.

  9. Store in an air-tight container for up to one week.
